The wool was originally custom-spun for Elizabeth Zimmermann, according to her specifications, by Minnesota's Cambridge Woollen Mills in 1959. Her goal was to produce a commercial wool that would most closely replicate the Cowichan handspun wool of the Coastal Salish spinners and knitters. She came up with the name Sheepsdown, and designed a logo for it. Now the wool is spun for us by Bartlettyarns; they added Elizabeth's wool to their line and label it Bulky. Thick, soft, in both undyed sheep shades and dyed colors. Lovely for blankets, coats, hats, and Salish jackets. If you are making a sweater with this beautiful material, be sure to add extra stitches to the circumference, as the OUTside measurement will vary significantly from the INside and you need to ensure plenty of room for the wearer. Material: 100% Undyed or Dyed Wool, depending on shade Weight: 4 oz. skein Yardage: The mill has shifted to 80 yards per skein. Most of our patterns were based on amounts needed when the skeins were 85 yards. Please adjust accordingly (usually add one skein for small items) or give us a call. Gauge:2 to 3 stitches to 1 inch. Price: $9.30 per skein. Choose the quantity for each color you wish to order and click Add to Cart at the bottom of the page.
